Is you can’t afford divorce, is it possible to get the fee waived?

The marriage only lasted 3 months. No kids and no real shared property. Both parties agree the divorce is necessary. Neither can afford the expensive fee. Can it be waived? And if possible where can this man go to get the appropriate forms?

  1. You have to pay a fee to divorce?! This world is insane.

  2. you can go file without a divorce at your district court for no more than $300. There’s always a price for something.

  3. You can buy a Divorce Kit at a stationary store, like Staples for about $30.00. Fill out the forms yourself, following the state by state guidelines in the booklet that comes with it. OR you can hire a lawyer, just to help you fill out the forms (not to represent you) for a fee of their determination….but ultimately the cheapest way is to do it yourself, but there’s a filing fee, and I’m sorry, there’s no way to get around that. It varies from state to state, but should be no more than a couple hundred dollars.

The cheapest way possible is to get the papers from the library and file them with your county clerk.

You cant get around the filing fee.

  6. Most cities have free or low cost legal aid services, and you can get forms online or at the county offices and file them yourself. Works well if there is no property or children.

  7. While there are various places to get low cost divorce forms, there is no fee waiver. You can get the forms, and try to complete them yourself however be careful this isn’t something you want to skimp on or make a mistake on. Then you have to file the papers at your local court house, which charges a filing fee. All states are different, as to how much they charge, they vary from $150-300, sometimes more (like in CA).
If you cannot afford the filing fee then you cannot divorce. No court will give you a break, or give it to you for free.
